Quick Overview

Featuring a heavy-duty, die-cast design and convenient table-top placement, the new tuner will prove ideal for studio use or on the road where accuracy competes with clutter, noise, and poor lighting. To that end, the readout is exceptionally bright compared to competing units, while an extremely simple, user-friendly design promotes additional ease of tuning. All students, techs, and working musicians will appreciate the True Strobe Tuner's top-of-the-line technology.

Planet Waves Tru-Strobe Desktop Tuner

In the innovation tradition of other acclaimed Planet Waves tuners, the new Table-Top True Strobe Tuner enables the musician to fine-tune any stringed instrument using the most exacting method on the market, the strobe. The new tuner offers true strobe accuracy (not a simulation) that will ensure that the unit will perform with precision, when other tuners falter. Accuracy is +/- .1 cent, up to 15 times more accurate than traditional electronic tuners.

If you've been using one of the pocket tuners (Korg or similar) it is probably enough to get you by, but if your ears are telling you there's something off even if the tuner says it's on (they have a relatively wide tolerance for error), or if you do any kind of work adjusting your instrument, intonating etc, then a strobe tuner is a good investment.

As others have pointed out, the Planet Waves is a solid, flashy unit. The flashing lights take a minute to get used to but you'll get it fast enough. The principle is similar to watching the spokes of a wagon wheel that seem to go forward and backward compared to the actual direction of the wheel. When the spokes appear to stop, you are "on pitch". Personally, I'd rather have a quickly responding needle. But the lights are fast and accurate and as I said, you quickly get used to them.

The unit works best when plugged directly to the instrument, a bass guitar in my case. The mic is very sensitive, depending on your surroundings it can pick up ambient sounds that set the display off and run interference. It's annoying but hard to avoid. You don't just turn this on and leave it run, it will drive you crazy. Battery life can be limited depending on your use.

Overall very useful and if you think you need one, you probably do. Of the available strobe tuners this is on the low end of the price scale. (Posted on 10/21/10)
